What I Love about Being an Artist

There are countless aspects of my career that I have fallen in love with. On the one hand, I love everything about the creative process and the process of creating a new artwork. On the other hand, I genuinely enjoy the business side of things. Joining the two worlds of creating and business has been an interesting adventure, and I am well aware that there is still much to discover.

When it comes to creating a new artwork, there is something so personal about the painting process as it is an expression of myself. There is a quote by Jerzy Kosinski that inspires me: “The principle of true art is not to portray, but to evoke”.  I draw my inspiration from my ideals and values of femininity, elegance, grace, and softness. In the past, I have attempted to create paintings of a different style – trying to be a type of artist that I am not. These paintings failed in my eyes, because I was not being authentic to myself. I have learnt to lean into my personal style of creating, as it is a true extension of myself.  I love being an artist because I am able to create an artwork that someone else will fall in love with. It is so exciting to think that something unique, that I have spent hours and even days working on, is now hanging in someone’s home.

A crucial part of being an artist is to work on the business side of things. Luckily, this is something that I enjoy just as much as I enjoy to paint. If I want to make art my full-time career, then I need to make sure that it is a viable option. I have learnt about so many things this past year that I never thought I would ever know about business, and yet there is still SO much to learn! In saying that, marketing and sales can be frustrating at times, especially when I want to see the results quickly. Since I am trying to do it myself, I need to be patient with the fact that my business will grow as I learn.

Personally, being an artist is the most rewarding and exciting career for me. I know that it may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I feel so fortunate to have found a job that I love, and that I have the amazing support of my friends and family.
